The crew of Mars 1 are killed via a massive sand worm/storm when they shoot a radar beam at a mysterious mound on Mars in the movie. This occurs a bit differently in the script, the crew are all killed by an "invisible blast of energy".

TOBIAS
It's like he's hit by an invisible Mack truck. His body and suit compress, flatten. His faceplate shatters and his oxygen and blood stream out, his blood instantly crystallizing in the sub-zero atmosphere, just before he's sent flying.

MATERICK
Holds out his hands as if to ward off the blow. His arms crumple and snap and he too is blasted off his feet.

DRAKE
Is trying to turn, cover up, when the energy wave rips off his helmet, gloves and half his suit, killing him instantly.

CLOSE ON LUC
Horrified and stunned. In his faceplate we catch a brief glimpse of a wall of rock and clay rising up, surging towards him...

In the script, Luc's wife is names Kate and they have more than one son.

Here's how Phil's character is described in the script:

"rail-thin, messy, slightly bug-eyed and very hyper."

This fits Jerry O'Connell to a "T", doesn't it ;-)

Ray Beck gets the crew of Mars 2 together for the specific purpose of sending them off to Mars to rescue Luc. The movie's version has Woody literally begging Ray to send the team to Mars.

About halfway thorough the script, I got the idea that Jim McConnell was slightly suicidal. He's shown flying one of his experimental ultra lights around telephone poles and over wires.

This launch scene, which never appears in the movie, does a nice job of tying the astronauts with leaving the Earth and arriving near Mars orbit.

EXT. BEACH. CAPE CANAVERAL. NIGHT (TWO MONTHS LATER). (After the Mars 1 "incident")

From a great distance, we see the awesome aftermath of a night launch. The booster itself is already lost in high cloud cover, but we can track it as a VERY BRIGHT TAIL OF FIRE, which sets the entire heavens aglow and reflects off the ocean. Giant vapor plumes roll across the water towards us from the launch pad, as the echoing roar begins to diminish.

NEW ANGLE (TV CAMERA VIEW)
On a WOMAN REPORTER standing by one of the bonfires, microphone in hand, as she concludes her commentary.

But these three men and one woman carry with them something else, as well. The heartfelt prayers of all mankind... Godspeed the crew of Mars Recovery.

As she turns, looking upwards towards the clouds, the TV CAMERA follows her gaze. Rising sparks from the bonfire drifts in front of the lens. In a puff of ocean breeze, the
