Mars Movies
(Red Planet, M2M
& Mars IMAX 3D)
Reviews of this section will be made
as information becomes available. Currently, a major web-site
is in the works for the two Summer of 2000 movies. There's
also a sub-section in the works for MARS IMAX 3D, but not
for awhile since the movie doesn't come out for TWO years.

John
Carpender's Ghosts of Mars
You guessed it, another movie about Mars is set to go into
production soon. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the
film's story takes place 200 years in the future and is about
a group of human colonists on Mars who must be rescued when
they are possessed by ancient vengeful spirits of the red
planets previous owners. The film will have a script
by Carpenter with Larry Sulkis.
This is the fifth movie/television series about the planet
Mars to go into production within the last year. These other
movies/television series include MISSION
TO MARS, RED PLANET,
MARS (The Fox
mini-series) and MARS
IMAX 3D

Red
Planet
The X-FILES on Mars? One item of interest from the Cinescape.com
web-site from the movie Red Planet:
Pfarrer Talks Red Planet
Red Planet screenwriter Chuck Pfarrer is talking up what
makes his Mars movie unique from the others. While talking to
SFX magazine,
Pfarrer gave some intriguing suggestions of what we can expect
in the film that will star Val Kilmer, saying, "What if
Pathfinder rolled up and turned over a rock, and that rock turned
out to be a 2-billion-year-old human skull!"
Pfarrer seems to have also based his script on possibly extreme
conjecture about the red planet saying, "I mean, there
still has yet to be a photograph released of that structure
on the moon called The Shard, which is this geological anomaly
there that's apparently an eight-mile-high, 300-foot wide
thing that juts up like a skyscraper out of the back-side
of the moon. That anomaly in itself was the inspiration for
the monolith in 2001. That's part of the lore of the space
conspiracists."

One item of interest
on the Red Planet front, again from Dark Horizons.com.
Red Planet: Val Kilmer, Terence Stamp, Benjamin Bratt and the
rest of the cast and crew have been doing it tough with a week-long
night shoot at a quarry just outside Sydney. According to the
Sydney Morning Herald the crew spent two weeks in Jordan and
three weeks in Coober Pedy shooting exteriors before this quarry
stint. Its followed by another nine weeks of shooting around
the FOX Studios complex in eastern Sydney. One of the challenges
of filming in the outback town of Coober Pedy was the flies
which got annoying when you're pretending to be filming on a
lifeless planet. |

One little item of note out of Dark Horizons.com. FYI, this
plot synopses closely follows the version of the script that
I read. (Spoiler: That intelligent life on Mars that "once
existed" abandoned the planet after a cataclysmic asteroid
strike on the planet.
Mission to Mars: When an eruption from a dome-shaped object
disables a crew of astronauts that have set up a base camp on
Mars, another team if astronauts journey there in an effort
to rescue the crew's leader, and once on the planet, find evidence
that intelligent life once existed.

One item of interest from these stories is the short synopsis
delivered in the SPACE.com article about the movie RED PLANET:
"Red Planet" is set in the near future.
Earth is a dying planet and a team of American astronauts
is sent to Mars on a last-ditch effort to find a suitable
refuge for endangered humanity. As personality conflicts and
equipment breakdowns threaten their mission, the astronauts
have to work together to survive.
