Deep
Blue Aaagghhh!

Eight
months. That's how long I've waited to see the movie DEEP BLUE SEA.
When I downloaded that first trailer that cold December day back
in 1998 I was working at another job and all my coworkers gathered
around to bask in the glow of this kick-@$$ trailer. However, even
after all that I went into the movie not expecting much. As long
as it wasn't as bad as ANACONDA or the extremely horrendous LAKE
PLACID, read Michael's review
for yourself, I'd consider myself lucky. Interestingly enough, I
was surprised as to how good the movie really was. From the beginning
to the end, DEEP BLUE SEA had me on the edge of my seat waiting
to find out which cast member would be consumed next.
The
movie DEEP BLUE SEA follows several scientists off the coast of
Mexico doing brain research on sharks. This research requires the
scientists to enlarge the brains of the sharks, in effect making
the sharks super-smart and super-deadly. These sharks hate both
humans and other, natural sharks, equally. If they are released,
or ever escape, into the wide open ocean, the Deep Blue Sea, they
would wipe out all other natural sharks and go about attacking boats
and killing humans. After a severe storm, a helicopter crash and
subsequent explosion, the station is damaged so much that the scientists
turn from the research of the sharks to destroying them before they
can escape from the slowly sinking station. The sharks have other
notions when they fight back consuming every human in site.
Although the movie does possess striking
similarities between the POSEIDON ADVENTURE and, of course, JAWS,
DEEP BLUE SEA presents this material in a new, fresh way. The audience
is constantly reminded that, as Joe Bob puts it, anyone can die
at any moment. Don't get too attached to any one character, even
the well named actors are ripped to shreds, via awesome CG. Be sure
to watch for director Renny Harlen who makes a cameo appearance
as a crew member leaving the station for the weekend. DEEP BLUE
SEA is a fun movie that's the proverbial "Roller-Coaster"
ride from start to finish, a must Summer see. 8/9/1999
