Based
in the farthest reaches of the Federation lies Deep Space Nine. Orbiting the planet Bajor, the Cardassian-built
station is used for avariety of things. Trade, protection, and a way-point
to the Worm Hole are just a few of
its duties. Under the command of Captain Ben Sisko, the station has become a Focal point for primary operations of
Starfleet. The Worm hole has become a conduit
to the Gamma Quadrant, a somewhat unexplored
region of the galaxy. However, with the discovery of new territory, so comes the price of danger. As a result, the
Federation has engaged one of its biggest challenges since its creation.... The Dominion. The Dominion are a warrior-based
alien race, hell bent on conquering the Alpha
Quadrant. The war has developed into a lengthy campaign, with many casualties
on both sides. As a result, the Federation
has "tricked" the Romulans in joining
in on the war, giving the "Alpha Quadrant" a larger defense
force. The war continues on......
Commentary After viewing several years of Star Trek, and other spin offs,
I find the DS9 series to be a series
that starts off dull and builds itself up with
character development and a involved storyline. Like The Next Generation, it took awhile for the characters of
the show as well as the writers to
become more comfortable with themselves, as well asothers. Since DS9 is
in its prime, all shows must come to an end soon. The wonder I have is what will happen after? Will there be movies?
Will there be a spin off of DS9 to another show? What exactly is going
to happen?
Characters Character development has always been a hard thing for Star Trek
to do when developing a new series.
DS9 does offer some veteran actors in its
fold, including Avery Brooks, who plays Captain Sisko. Others also include
Michael Dorn, who plays Lt. Commander Worf on the DS9 series, and also in the current releases of the Star Trek Next
Generation Movies. Rene Auberjonois, who played
on the 80's show "Benson"
is now the changeling security officer, and Nana Visitor plays the recently promoted Colonel Kira Nerys.
Storyline Following the DS9 time line is somewhat difficult at times, due
to the writers keeping the show "interesting".
However, I feel that the storyline
should just stick to the straight on and true, not to side episodes of where Captain Sisko is competing with
an old Star Fleet rival. The one thing
I have always felt that Star Trek series never stick to is a good old fashioned space battle. However, with the
interdiction of the Dominion, DS9 has become
a more involved storyline, giving the
viewers what they want to see. If it was you, what would you want?
